SANTIAGO occupies one of the world's most spectacular settings with the snow-capped Andes forming an imposing backdrop. A colourful mixture of Spanish colonial and 19th century European architecture there is much to see. A favourite spot for people-watching is the Plaza de Armas in the heart of the old town. Visit the Palacio de la Moneda, the pre-Colombian art museum and the Casa Colorada, an 18th century mansion housing the Museo de Santiago. For impressive views over the city and Andean mountains ascend San Cristobal Hill with its 46-foot-high statue of the Virgin Mary. |
