Leaving Antarctica we cruise around Cape Horn, through the Beagle Channel and Bahia Garibaldi before we arrive at PUNTA ARENAS. Located on the northern shore of the Strait of Magellan - through which the famous explorer passed in 1520 - Punta Arenas lies in an area of outstanding natural beauty. In the heart of town lies Plaza de Armas, where a statue of Magellan brings good luck to all who rub his foot - or so local legend says. Few will want to miss the spectacular excursion by air to the Torres del Paine National Park, Chile's 450,000-acre showpiece. Here amid lakes, forests and immense glaciers, the twin granite peaks of the Torres del Paine soar 6,500 feet above the Patagonian Plain. |
