Puerto Montt

The typical middle-European architecture of PUERTO MONTT makes us wonder if we are indeed in South America, for this gateway to the Chilean Lake District was founded by German settlers in the mid-19th century. The colourful port clings to the hillsides and offers a chance to explore and shop for handicrafts. But it is out of town amid the lakes, rivers, waterfalls, forests and mountains where the best sights await. Towering volcanic Mt. Osorno with its eternally snow-capped peak reflects into the emerald-green waters of Lake Todos Los Santos, also known as Lake Esmeralda and described by Theodore Roosevelt as 'the most beautiful lake he had ever seen'.
